Case Study: Commercial EV Charger Installation at the Netherlands Embassy, Kensington

Client: Netherlands Embassy
Location: Kensington, London
Sector: Government / Embassy
Project Type: Commercial EV Charger Installation
Installer: London EV Chargers

Project Overview

Following the successful completion of an EV charger installation at the Netherlands Embassy Residence, London EV Chargers was invited back to deliver the next phase of the project at the Netherlands Embassy in Kensington.

The Embassy required a commercial EV charging solution that would support current demand while allowing for future expansion. The project also involved upgrading the site’s electrical infrastructure and securing available government funding to reduce the overall installation cost.

Being invited to undertake the second phase of works reflected the Embassy’s confidence in the quality of our installation, project management and customer service.

The Challenge

Commercial EV charging projects require considerably more planning than simply installing charging points.

For this installation, the project included:

  • Installation of two dual 40kW commercial EV chargers
  • Dedicated consumer units for the charging infrastructure
  • Dynamic load balancing
  • Future-proof cabling for additional EV chargers
  • DNO application and approval
  • Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) grant application
  • EV Infrastructure Grant application
  • Minimal disruption to Embassy operations

Every stage had to be carefully planned to ensure the installation was both reliable today and ready for future expansion.

Our Solution

Following a comprehensive site survey, our engineers designed an installation that met the Embassy’s operational requirements while providing capacity for future growth.

The project included:

  • Two dual 40kW commercial EV chargers
  • New dedicated consumer units
  • Intelligent load balancing to optimise available electrical capacity
  • Infrastructure installed for future charging bays
  • Full DNO application and coordination
  • Grant application support to maximise available government funding

By planning ahead, the Embassy can expand its charging facilities in the future without the need for significant additional electrical works.

Government Grant Support

One of the key benefits of this project was securing government funding.

For this installation, London EV Chargers successfully assisted with applications for:

  • Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS)
  • EV Infrastructure Grant

These grants helped reduce the overall installation costs while enabling the Embassy to invest in future-ready charging infrastructure.

As grant schemes are regularly updated, our team advises clients on the latest funding opportunities and manages as much of the application process as possible.

Installation Process

Detailed Site Survey

A full assessment of the site’s electrical infrastructure was completed to determine charger locations, cable routes and future expansion requirements.

Electrical Infrastructure

Dedicated consumer units were installed specifically for the EV charging system, ensuring a safe and compliant installation without affecting the building’s existing electrical circuits.

DNO Approval

Due to the size of the installation and electrical demand, approval from the local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) was required before work commenced.

Our team managed the application process and coordinated with the DNO throughout the project.

Future-Proof Installation

Additional cabling infrastructure was installed during this phase, making it significantly easier and more cost-effective to add further EV chargers as demand increases.

Testing & Commissioning

Once installation was complete, every charger underwent comprehensive testing and commissioning to verify performance, safety and compliance before being handed over to the client.

Results

The completed installation now provides:

  • Commercial-grade EV charging for Embassy users
  • Dedicated electrical infrastructure
  • Intelligent load balancing
  • Infrastructure ready for future expansion
  • Reduced installation costs through government grants
  • A fully compliant, future-ready charging solution

The Embassy now benefits from a scalable EV charging system that supports its transition towards electric vehicles while providing flexibility for future growth.
